1st Week of Classes

I have now been to all of my first classes for the semester. On Tuesday I had my Interior Architecture Studio course. In my schedule it says my class is 8-9 lecture and 2-5 studio. In true design school fashion, they informed us on the first day that in fact, lecture actually be from 10-11 and morning studio 11-1 and afternoon studio 2-4. I must say that I am pleased that I will not have to go to an 8am lecture.

Studio 5: Interior Architecture

When I got there I sort of tagged along with the girls who happened to be in the elevator with me. They all seem very sweet and along with the only other exchange student in my course, Jenny from Scotland, we've made a group of 7 with them to work on our project together. The title of our studio project is "7 houses on a bridge" and it literally is 7 houses on a bridge, of which each has a distinct persona and spot in the order. None of us had particularly strong desires for any one persona so we drew them out of a hat and I ended up with a persona called "House of the Decider".

So here is the blurb for House of the Decider:
"Everything is planned and worked out; there are 24 sleeping rooms with a sink in every room. At  the dining tables on the floor of the courtyard there are 22 seats. Each day one seat is reserved for a guest. Every morning breakfast is served at 6 am. Everyone gets an apple and a buckwheat pancake. Every menu has been planned in advance for three meals a day for the entire year. The annual menu varies odd and even years. It is possible to predict exactly what will be served on a given day forty years into the future. There are no surprises in the House of the Decider."

So there you have it. If you think that's cryptic, you're right. However it is one of the least cryptic blurbs of the set. For now we are putting it aside. It will come more into play for the third assignment. For assignment 1, due in less than 2 weeks, My task was to go to the Botanic Garden of Adelaide and take some Macro pictures of whatever I see that inspires me. I then chose 2 photos to manipulate digitally as I please. From there I do two drawings off these manipulated photos. Think abstract and just out of reach for wrapping my head around it and you'll be in the right zone of thinking. We shall see but no doubt it will be very interesting and I'm excited to explore another approach to design.



Social and Community Planning

Wednesday I have a course called Social and Community Planning. It is on a different campus. UniSA has 4 different campuses in total, 2 of which are within the city core limits.  So I headed to City East where I was in a rather small class of what turned out to be, all "planners" even though it is an ARCH course code.  For the lecture component of class, the prof went right into our first lecture which was basically comprised of what is a community and defining the different roles and definitions of social planning etc. Within this conversation our prof referenced different kinds of intentional communities like eco villages and kibuttzim.  A few slides later a student put up their hand and asked what a "kibu...kibu...kib" to which the prof responded I don't know how to pronounce it. I jumped in at which point they asked me to try and explain what it is. Cue everyone turning around to look at me questioning who is this girl and where is she from with that different accent. Yes I have to remember that currently I am the one with an accent. Well I do have a habit of making my self known in a new environment. We then went to our tutorial sessions where the course outline was explained. Its primarily an essay based class with the exception of one presentation. My partner and I got the topic of Gender and Planning which I thing will be very very interesting.

So now I have all my due dates and assignments and I'm getting my semester sorted out.

Looks like it'll be a good one with three very different classes and balance of hands on work and writing/reading work.
